Scholarship Award Dinner: Oct. 22, 2011 |
|---|
On October 22, JACL Houston held an awards dinner at the Salt Grass Restaurant to honor the recent recipients of our local JACL Hada Memorial scholarship. It is with great honor that JACL Houston Chapter awarded the HADA Scholarship to both Monica Matsumoto (Sophomore at Rice University) and Corey Beaumont, (recent MBA graduate from Millsaps College) both much deserving young people who are continuing the legacy and history of JACL Houston and JACL National. Each was awarded a $500 scholarship. Monica Matsumoto has been active in the Houston Chapter of JACL for the past year, which included attending the National JACL conference in Los Angeles in July 2011. Also in July Monica Motsumoto received notice that she had been awarded a National JACL Undergraduate Scholarship, the Alice Yuriko Endo Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1000. Corey Beaumont is working on a website relating to Civil Rights and will keep us posted on his progress So congratulations to Monica Matsumoto and Corey Beaumont. Also a special thanks to Gary Nakamura for his tireless work to find the best qualified applicants. And of course, a very special thanks goes to Mari & Harry Okabayashi for continuing to help fund these awards each year. Also to Darlene and George Hirasaki and Howard Lindsay who have quietly taken up the slack to contribute for the Youth Fund, which enabled Corey Beaumont to come to Houston to receive his award.
